EC- PM Gilani allowed to contest polls
Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday allowed former prime minister (PM) Yousuf Raza Gilani to contest election 2018.
A two members bench of SC presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar took up for hearing plea filed against acceptance of nomination papers of Gilani.
According to the sources, the court rejected the appeal plea seeking rejection of nomination papers of ex-premier.
The petition was filed by rival candidate Nisar Ahmad taking the stance that wife, mother and mother in law of Gilani were directors of two companies and the former PM had got his loans written off by their help.
When inquired by the CJP, the petitioner told that Fouzia Gilani holds 12 per cent shares to which justice Nisar asked does it render one disqualified from contesting polls having 12 per cent shares in a company.
The counsel for the petitioner said SC had declared loan write off wrong. However, to this Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked the court has not declared the loan written off by state bank as wrong.
Therefore, the court while rejecting the petition against Gilani allowed him to contest the forthcoming polls.
