Energy crisis: Speakers call for exploiting renewable energy resources

Speakers have called for exploiting indigenous and renewable resources to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and avoid the rising cost of energy bills.

“We have to find indigenous solutions to the local problems, as we have ample renewable resources and it is high time we switch to them,” said Islamic International University Islamabad Rector Dr Masoom Yasinzai while speaker at a conference on power generation systems and renewable energy technologies on Monday.

He underlined the need for exploiting indigenous and renewable energy resources and stop relying only on fossil fuel.

The three-day conference was organised by the IIUI Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Local and foreign experts, researchers and academicians discussed ocean energy and hydropower generation, fossil fuel power generation system and technologies and renewable energy systems.

Member National Assembly Sadaqat Ali Abbasi said that the current government was keen to have linkages between the academia and the relevant ministries.

He maintained that research will be the top priority of the government and projects relevant to the needs of society will be encouraged.

He also assured to extend every possible support to the university for carrying out research on renewable energy.

Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) former chairman Dr Ansar Parvez said that energy needs should be met in a way that resources of the future generations should not be compromised.

He discussed the accidents happened in the nuclear plants across the world and also elaborated misconceptions about the risk factors. While talking about the renewable energy, he explained the positive impacts of hydro wind and solar power energy resources on the environment.

He stressed that renewable energy technologies should be adopted.

Faculty of Engineering and Technology Dean Dr Muhammad Amir welcomed the audience of the conference, which was also attended by the IIUI Vice-President Dr Tahir Khalily, Dr Aqdas Naveed, Dr Farkhanda Zia, DME Chairperson Dr Saeed Badshah, faculty members, students and others.
