The government and the opposition parties have locked horns over the selection of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairperson.

The opposition has nominated Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Chief Shehbaz Sharif for the chair of PAC while the federal minister for information has said that PAC chair belonged to the government.

On the other hand, opposition made it clear that if chairman PAC would not be from opposition then opposition will boycott the PAC.

Sources told ‘Daily Morning Mail’ that Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser has called a meeting of the parliamentary leaders today (Wednesday) in his chambers to decide the chairpersons for various standing committees including PAC.

Afterwards the NA speaker will announce the special committee to investigate the rigging allegations in election and for this PTI has given the name of Defence Minister Pervez Khattak for   chairman, however, the final decision would be taken in the meeting.

PML-N spokesman told media that the NA speaker has promised with opposition that PAC chairman would be from opposition and we hope he would fulfill his commitment.

On the other hand, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) delegation met with opposition leader in the national assembly Shehbaz Sharif and discussed the political situation as well as the mini budget and issue of special committee for rigging allegations and decided that both parties would cooperate with each other in Parliament on different issues.

Then head of PPP delegation Syed Khursheed Shah told media that they discussed issues relating to mini budget and formation of standing committees while by-election also came under discussion.

After that meeting, opposition formally nominated Shehbaz Sharif for PAC chairperson and conveyed this decision to NA speaker.

Sources said that opposition has taken decision that if PAC chairperson is not be from opposition then none of opposition party members will be part of the PAC.

Opposition first considered the names of Khawaja Asif and Ayaz Sadiq for PAC chairperson but after meeting with the PPP they nominated Shehbaz.

On the other hand Federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry has said that chairman PAC would be from the government because we have to check the audit reports of previous government’s tenure and it was their right to take the PAC chairpman’s slot.
