Peace mediator no more

At a time when the whole country was passing through chaos due to protests by the Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan, the miscreants played their own game of massacre. The killing of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-S) chief Maulana Samiul Haq has shocked everyone. Born on December 18, 1937 in Akora Khattak, Nowshera, Haq had sidelined himself from active politics due to his age and unsteady health. During his long life, he served on both religious and political fronts. Maulana Samiul Haq was one of the distinguished politicians and an influential religious scholar. Maulana Haq was the head of the Darul Uloom Haqqania seminary in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Akora Khattak. He was an influential figure among members of the Taliban on both sides of the Afghan-Pakistan border. He was known as the father of the Taliban.

The assassination of Maulana Samiul Haq adds to the long list of high profile killings in the country where the murderers have not been traced yet. The motive behind the latest killing is also unclear while it is being speculated that it was yet another criminal act to fuel and spread further chaos in the country. It is also being presumed that the militants who disliked his policies have martyred him. Though the police have been investigating the motive behind the killing, yet they are so far clueless.

Maulana Sami has led a life while making a mark in the field of education and politics. He was running a seminary inherited from his father which had produced notable graduates leading the Afghan Taliban resistance in Afghanistan, among them the Haqqani network. But perhaps one of Maulana Sami’s singular most contributions to the nation lay not in educating Taliban warriors or to the national political history, but in his rather brave role in issuing an edict in support of polio immunisation campaign in December 2013.

Maulana Samiul Haq was known for his influence on the Afghan Taliban and times and again he was asked by the Pakistani, US and Afghan governments to convince the Taliban to come on the negotiating table but the issue remained inconclusive due to uncertain conditions and complications. Being custodian of Darul Uloom Haqqania, Maulana made a real impact on the education of young generation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for which the government of PTI also allocated funds from the provincial budget. The PTI government believed that with the cooperation of religious institutions they could reform the seminary education and this was the reason that the PTI had made an alliance with the JUI-S. Though Maulana Samiul Haq was not revered by many due to his attachment with the Afghan Taliban, yet he always stressed the need for peaceful solution of all issues and his role as a peace mediator will always be remembered.
