The Parliamentary Committee on Judges Appointment will meet on Thursday (today) to discuss and approve the name of the new chief justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
Chaudhry Asim Nazir, a member of the committee, will chair the meeting at the Parliament House.
The panel will most likely approve the Judicial Commission of Pakistan’s proposal for appointing Justice Athar Minallah as new IHC chief justice.
Earlier, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar headed a meeting on November 1 to consider the name of Justice Minallah for the top slot. IHC chief justice Justice Muhammad Anwar Kasi is retiring on November 27.
Justice Minallah, hailing from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, had earlier handed down a ruling suspending the conviction of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz and Muhammad Safdar by a trial court in the Avenfield properties reference.
Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui, who was the senior (puisne) most judge of the high court, was removed on the recommendations of the Supreme Judicial Council in a case pertaining professional misconduct.
On October 11, President Arif Alvi removed Siddiqui from his post in the light of a recommendation of the SJC. NNI
