Water crisis in Balochistan: Senators express concern over situation

Senators from Balochistan have expressed grave concern over deepening water crisis in the province at the meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Water Resources.

The committee met here Wednesday under its chairman Shamim Afridi at the Parliament Lodges and secretary water resources and the Wapda chairman gave briefing to the participants of the meeting.

The Wapda chairman said that the Wapda had completed projects in Balochistan on top priority basis.

First phase of Kachchi canal is complete. Balochistan has a facility of 72,000 cusecs water, he said.  The Wapda chairman held that for want of water distribution system in Balochistan, water was not being utilised.

Balochistan government is a hindrance in the way to construction of Naulong Dam. Balochistan government has not obtained the requisite NOC for construction of the dam. The Asian Development Bank had set pre-condition of obtaining NOC for providing loan with regards to this dam.

The Wapda chairman said Balochistan was having 72,000 acres feet of water.  Balochistan can utilise 10,000 acres feet of water.

The Wapda has completed projects within one and a half year, which were lying pending for the last 15 years.

The Wapda projects cannot be completed for 10 years due to lack of funds.

Senator Hasil Bazenjo said Balochistan water projects should be completed with the help of Chief Justice dam funds.
