Senate body prepares compulsory internship bill for university students

Senate Standing Sub-Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training Monday said the Committee has prepared a bill to declare internship as compulsory for the university students.

The meeting was chaired by the Convener of the committee Senator Nauman Wazir Khatak which also attended by the Senator Engr. Rukhsana Zuberi, Chairman and Executive Director HEC, Officials from education and law ministries, ED NAVTTC and VC Bahria University.

HEC has demanded time from committee for further discussion on the bill.

Chairing the meeting, Senator Nauman said that practical training should be mandatory for engineering students. In this regard, he said that we have prepared a bill under which the training of six to eight weeks has been declared compulsory for these students. This training, he said, would be given in final years.

Senator Nauman directed HEC to hold a Seminar for further discussion on the internship bill in consultation with all stake holders.

Chairman Higher Education Commission(HEC) Dr Tariq Bauri replied that we will hold a meeting with all concerned stake holders in one month.

After organizing the seminar we will present the recommendations to committee, he added. Speaking on the occasion, Chairman Dr Tariq Banuri said that legislation is best way to link academia with the industry. The cooperation with the industry will benefit students, he added.

Nauman Wazir suggested that besides the engineering students, the training should also be given to the students of MBA and MCom.

The Vice Chancellor Bahria University said that he fully support technology development but the industry will also have to take on board.

Nauman Wazir said that universities are only studying theory, adding, higher educational institutions are not providing internship to students. The committee has sought reply from HEC in six weeks in this regard.
