The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has summoned Opposition Leader in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif’s family, including his daughters and wife, for an investigation into the assets beyond known means of income case.

Shehbaz’s wife has been summoned on April 17 while his daughter Rabia Sharif has been summoned on April 18 and Javeria Sharif has been summoned on April 19.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president’s son, Hamza Shehbaz, has also been summoned on April 15 in a case pertaining to construction of a nullah from government money. Hamza has been summoned on April 16 as well in a case pertaining to assets beyond known sources of income.

Meanwhile, a team of NAB visited the residence of Shehbaz’s daughter in Model Town area of the city and served a notice summoning them.

Responding to reports of a raid at the residence of Shehbaz’s daughter, the NAB Lahore said a team of its officials went there to serve the notice summoning them on April 16.

It said the only police vehicle there was for the security of NAB team and the residence of the opposition leader’s daughter was not raided.

The NAB Lahore said there was no truth in reports of a laying siege to the residence.

“Some individuals have been doing baseless propaganda to malign the NAB,” it said in the statement, adding that investigations were ongoing pertaining to assets-beyond means and money laundering cases against the Sharif family.

PML-N spokesperson Maryam Aurangzeb in her reaction to the development questioned the constitutional validity of the action.

“What kind of accountability is this? How can one raid at someone’s residential place without giving notice,” she asked.

Meanwhile, Hamza Shehbaz alleged that the government and NAB have joined hands against him, Sharif family and his party.

Speaking in a press conference, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader said that the NAB officials instructed him to resolve issues with the government. “Why all out of a sudden the investigations related to assets beyond means cases have been paced up,” he said. “Name me one civilized country where daughters are given notices.”

Hamza said that the government offered him relief from the cases in case he cooperates with them, adding that the director general of the NAB requested him to not raise objection over his suspicious degree.

“Shehzad told me we are not interested in arresting you. Fix your relations with the government,” he said. The PML-N leader requested the Supreme Court to take notice of the NAB actions.

He said that the entire system has frozen due to NAB actions as the investors are reluctant to come in the country as they are scared that the NAB will come after them.

The PML-N leader said that while the nation is hit by inflation, the premier is stuck on his personal enmity with the Sharif family.

“The Railway Minister has made fun of the institutions by saying that a deal has been struck,” he added.

The Lahore High Court on Monday restrained NAB from arresting Hamza. NAB had carried out two successive raids last week at Shehbaz’s Model Town residence to arrest Hamza.

On Friday, a combined investigation team (CIT) of NAB grilled Hamza Shehbaz for two hours at the NAB Complex at Thokar Niaz Beg. He has been accused of accumulating assets beyond his known means of income.

During the two hours inside, NAB questioned him over the increase of his assets from Rs20 million to over Rs410 million between 2003 and 2019. They inquired about Hamza’s source of income and his relation to arrested accused Fazal Dad.

The bureau also questioned Hamza about the exponential increase of his assets during the tenure of his father Shehbaz Sharif as Punjab chief minister.

Hamza tried to convince the NAB team by answering the questions and sharing a few documents. However, he was reportedly unable to satisfy the investigators.
