Imran to meet trump on July 22, Washington confirms

Putting an end to the speculation, the White House on Wednesday confirmed that Prime Minister Imran Khan will meet the US President Donald J. Trump on July 22.

“President Donald J. Trump will welcome Prime Minister Imran Khan of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the White House on July 22, 2019.” a press release by the White House said.

According to the press release, the visit will focus on strengthening cooperation between the United States and Pakistan to bring peace, stability, and economic prosperity to a region that has seen far too much conflict.

“President Trump and Prime Minister Khan will discuss a range of issues, including counterterrorism, defense, energy, and trade, with the goal of creating the conditions for a peaceful South Asia and an enduring partnership between our two countries,” the press release added.

Earlier in the day a statement by the State Department spokesperson set off rumour mills in which said that the “White House is yet to confirm Premier Imran’s visit to the US.

“I know that I have read the same reports that you have, but I would reach out to the White House to confirm or not confirm that visit, but that’s – we don’t have anything to announce here from the State Department,” she said in response to a question regarding expected meetings between the US and Pakistani leadership.

The Foreign Office which has already confirmed the visit, cautioned “against speculation” regarding the visit.

Foreign Office Spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal in a Twitter post wrote “We wish to caution against speculation about PM’s visit. We are in close contact with the US side.”

FO Spokesperson added that formal announcements for such events are made at an appropriate time.

Separately, Prime Minister Imran Khan while talking to the various delegations representing business community of Karachi said the he will be going on a visit to US adding that he will  stay at the embassy instead of any fancy hotel.

On the other hand, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Zulfi Bukhari, while addressing the Pakistani embassy in Washington, has pledged to surface details of PM Imran’s visit in few days. He said that the premier will also visit Pakistani community and meet the people.

On July 4, the FO confirmed that PM Imran will meet President Donald Trump on July 22 at the White House. Pakistani officials had stated that the visit is meant to reset bilateral ties between the two countries

On June 29, reports about PM Imran visiting United States from July 20 to July 24 emerged. It was informed that Imran Khan will hold meetings with the US President Donald Trump and other high-level officials.

During the visit, matters pertaining to Pak-US bilateral relations, regional situation and Afghan peace process will come under discussion.
