Another one of our legend actor from the famed era of the golden PTV days passed away. And condolences poured in from the showbiz fraternity and civil society at large. Zaheen Tahira for nearly 50 years worked for television, radio, film and theatre.
She suffered a heart attack on June 23 and was admitted to a hospital. There were rumours of her death on social media when she was bravely fighting for her life. On Tuesday morning, she breathed her last.
She was born in Lucknow in 1940 and migrated to Pakistan with her family at an early age and became part of the Radio Pakistan. When television came around, she very easily made that switch. Khuda Ki Basti, aired in 1969, gave her the breakthrough. She playing the role of Behroz Sabzwari’s mother became a household name. During the decades of 70s and 80s, she was part of many hit TV dramas.
She played the role of a mother in Khuda ki Basti with such aplomb that afterwards playing a mother became her forte and there were few in the industry who could rival her in that role. The only other motherly figure that comes to mind is that of Nayyer Sultana. Although was largely focused on the films whereas Tahira mostly kept herself to the television.
Her most popular plays include Amawas, She Jee, Chaandni Raatain, Dil Diya Dehleez, Tair-e-Lahooti, Masi Aur Malka, Meray Qatil Meray Dildar, Umm-i-Kulsoom and Babban Khala Ki Betiyan.
Zaheen Tahira acted in over 700 drama serials in lead and supporting roles. She had the honor of receiving a lot of official awards, the most prestigious among them was the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz conferred on her in recognition of her work in the entertainment industry in 2013. She will be sorely missed.
