Six die in wall collapse during Independence Day ceremony in Gilgit

At least six persons died and eighteen others injured late Tuesday night after a boundary wall collapsed in cantonment area of Gilgit during a programme held to mark Independence Day.

The injured were shifted to Combined Military Hospitals Gilgit for treatment.

Those died in the incident were identified as Ali, 13-year-old; Amjad, Karimullah, and Zakir Hussain, Arif Khan.

Identity of one deceased could not be ascertained.

Three of the injured — Riaz Khan, Mujahid and another person who’s identity could not be ascertained — are in critical condition.

The other injured Sepoy Shoaib Sultan and his wife, Lance Naik (retd) Zafarullah, Haveldar (Retd) Ghulam Abbas, Lance naik  Zafarullah Khan, Saqlain Noor , Ali Afzal, Liaqat Ali, Ghulam Abbas, Shehzad, Amjad Ali, Niyat Pana, Naeem abbas, Sher Ameen, Zuhair, Ayaan Haider, and Zar khan.

Commander Force Command Northern Areas Maj General Ahsan Mehmood Khan, Deputy Speaker Gilgit Baltistan Assembly Jafarullah Khan along with other officials visited CMH and inquired about the health of injured besides supervising the relief and rescue operation.

The civil and military leadership expressed heartfelt condolence to families of the martyrs and prayed for early recovery of the injured.

According to witnesses, a large number of people had climbed the boundary wall to watch the Independence Day celebrations when it collapsed due to the weight of the people.
