Bilawal says govt plans to ‘occupy’ Karachi; PTI says govt has no plan to impose governor rule, emergency in Sindh
Reacting to Federal Law Minister Farogh Nasim’s remarks that government must invoke article 149 in order to address the issues facing Karachi, Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Thursday said that his party will not tolerate any conspiracy against Sindh.
Speaking at a press conference the MNA said the Centre wants to imprison its political opponents. Running the country isn’t the same as playing a cricket match, he said, asking if people sitting in Islamabad would be running Karachi now.
The PPP chairman said after depriving Sindh of its rights, the government now plans to occupy Karachi.
“We will not let (the government) snatch Sindh’s rights,” he said.
He said the country’s democratic struggle is rushing towards ruin. Restrictions are being imposed on freedom of expression, he said, adding that the country is in a tough situation.
If you want to run the country and the state, you must follow Bhutto’s laws, said Bilawal. He accused the Centre of trying to steal Sindh’s hospitals despite the law.
The PPP chief said the provinces were going bankrupt because of the Centre’s incompetence. He said his grandfather had brought in an economic revolution in the country.
The PPP will remain a wall in front of undemocratic forces and will not shy away from sacrifices to save the Centre, he said.
He said the federal government must come into its senses and take care of the people. There is a limit to injustice, said Bilawal. The Centre should take its designs on Karachi and go home, he said, adding that the MQM should resign from office.
The PPP will uncover these people and won’t let the government operate, he warned.
Separately, clarifying his statement, Nasim said wrong construction has been put on his statement as he has given only a proposal to invoke article 149 in Karachi.
Talking to a private TV channel the Law Minister said neither governor rule will be imposed in Sindh nor has any decision been taken to implement article 149 (4) .
Supreme Court will be resorted to if Sindh government creates any hurdle after the decision is taken, he underlined.
Law minister Farogh Nasim said intention is there that article 149 (4) of the constitution should be invoked in Karachi. Now the time has come to impose this article. I am in favour of invoking this article, he added.
Meanwhile, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan Thursday said the federal government has no plan of imposition of ‘Governor Rule’ or ‘Emergency’ in Sindh.
Talking to media outside the Parliament House, she said the statement of Law Minister Farogh Naseem has been twisted and reported out of the context.
Dr Firdous said Karachi, the commercial hub of the country has been turned into a heap of garbage and added during the past 11 years, some elements have been misusing its resources for personal gains.
She said the nation is expecting from those ruling elite class of Sindh to resolve the issues of the province on priority.
She said the people of Sindh in general and Karachiites in particular are paying the price of bad performance of the provincial government.
She said PTI’s MNAs and MPAs and other opposition parties in Sindh could not help resolve problems of their constituencies due to non-cooperation of the government.
She asked the Sindh government to adopt the path of cooperation instead of confrontation and prepare a strategy along with the federal government for the welfare of the people.
