Women eleven do us proud
One would wonder that in a cricket crazy nation the news of a match is known to the people once it is over and won. Hardly any cricket lover would know that Bangladesh women cricket team was in the country and has played and lost T20I series to gritty Pakistan 3-0.
This indifference is mindboggling. Is it the advertisers who do not see any return on the game played by the finer sex, so to say? Is it the cricket board itself that does not take pains to advertise the visit of a foreign team on its soil that otherwise it is dying for? Or is it the people who still are stuck in past considering that women belong in the kitchen and cannot play a game that is called the gentlemen’s game? The Shahid Afridi mindset.
Away from the television screens, our women did a good job of it and after playing a competitive cricket defeated the visiting BD team. Bisma Maroof, Javeria Khan and spinner Anam Amin were the pick of the series. Maroof bagged the Player of the Series award for scoring 108 runs in three matches at an average of 54. Javeria Khan who has been outstanding all through the series hit two back to back half centuries. She was Player of the Match in the third and last match. Anam who emerged in 2015 on the cricket scene has matured into a match winning player and gave a tough time to the visitors. In the third match too, she gave Pakistan a breakthrough very early on in the match by claiming two wickets in a space of three deliveries. This is what the BD could not recover from all through the innings.
While men in green are hopeless and unpredictable as ever, such a performance by the women should be a matter of pride for the nation. With a little more encouragement from the board and interest by the advertisers, our girls can bring us more laurels. Way to go, girls.
